The 12-Step Program has proven to be one of the most effective methods of achieving sobriety, as a spiritual path is empathized, helping many achieve a sense of greater purpose. The 12-Steps are based on the ideal that substance dependency is a spiritual and physical illness, and that one is powerless over addiction until seeking help from their Higher Power, whether that be nature, love, the universe or God.
The centuries-old practice has not only physical benefits, such as increased flexibility and increased muscle strength and tone, but profound emotional and spiritual benefits as well. The experience of spiritual well-being is significant in breaking the cycle of addiction, therefore merging yoga with the 12-Steps can be extremely beneficial to those in recovery.
Spiritual wellbeing is the ability to experience and integrate meaning and purpose in life through a person’s connectedness with self and a power greater than oneself. Addiction often manifests as a form of escapism for drug and alcohol abusers. The solution begins with confronting the reality that feelings of emptiness and longing are both inescapable and unfillable from the outside. The practice of yoga reverses the ordinarily outward flow of energy and consciousness, helping us to rediscover our individual spirit. One’s connectedness with true self is essential in connecting with a Higher Power.
Yoga allows the body to experience calm, quiet and tranquility, factors that have often been absent from the addict’s life for quite some time. It also help to release the stress and anxiety that accompany quitting drugs and alcohol. Overall, the benefits of incorporating yoga into recovery are many: helps lower stress, boosts the immune system, and lowers blood pressure as well as reduces anxiety, depression, fatigue, and insomnia.
Spirituality, inner peace, relaxation, solitude, these are all things that treat the body, mind and soul very well. They heal and ground people to a place of excellence. We are thrilled to be offer participants at iRecover Okanagan a weekly yoga class to support their recovery.
